Satisfying Day

Sunday actually started on Saturday for us. I was working on some baking and arranging since I was participating in Coffee Hour at church again, while Kellen was practicing his music for his recital Sunday afternoon. I ended up taking zuchinni bread, banana bread, pound cake, and brownies on two large trays for the Coffee Hour, and I felt like it was way too much food. However, that worked out just fine since the three other people who were supposed to bring stuff didn't at all. And I didn't even have to bring home leftovers (which I most definitely would have eaten myself) so everything worked out just great.

After church, we came home and had some lunch and then put Maddi down for her nap. Kellen praciticed his music and then played video games up until it was time to go to the recital. We had intended to leave in plenty of time to allow him to practice once more when we got there but that didn't end up happening because we realized half-way there that he had forgotten his music (these ones weren't memorized) and had to go back home for them. It meant that we walked in a few minutes after the recital was supposed to have started, but his teacher was holding off starting until we got there. She has seven students right now, five of which were performing on Sunday, and Kellen was the second one on the program. She couldn't afford to start without us unless she re-arranged the program, and we hadn't known that he was playing second. I am trying to put the video footage of him playing at the bottom of this post but, if that doesn't work, I'll have to do it via the desktop version instead. It just means that it takes more time and will have to be in it's own post a little later...

So after the performances, Mrs. Fields had certificates of participation (for her class and for the festival that they played in earlier in the year) as well as ribbons from the festival and a participation trophy for being in her class. Also, since she has a home-business growing petunias, she brought one for each adult likely to be at the recital and the kids got to pick out one for each of the adults that came supporting them (which means that Kellen picked out one each for me, Steve, and each of Steve's parents) which was really very nice of her to offer.
This is Kellen standing with all of the other students who performed that day...
Once the performance was over, Mrs. Fields took the piano students for a round of mini golf. The families were welcome to come, but she was only offering to pay for her students, of course! We let Madison just pick up an abandoned golf club and she followed the group all over the course playing with Kellen's golf ball whenever he wasn't actually using it, and sometimes when he was!
Since we wanted to be able to watch Kellen play, Steve, Bob, Judy, Madison and myself all tagged along even though we didn't actually play :)
Madison had a lot of fun pretending to play whenever she got the opportunity, and climbing all over the course (there were boulders everywhere) any time that she wasn't actually chasing a ball :)
By the time we were done with the mini golf, it was definitely time for some dinner. We had had plans to take Bob and Judy to a local bbq pit that we have fallen in love with, but they're apparently closed on Sundays. Instead, we went to a small, local Italian place that Steve and I have been to once before and felt was really good food. We also had the table turned on us just a little since they decided to treat us instead of the other way around. Thank you! Both kids were quite tuckered out by the time we got home, since it HAD been a rather long day, but it had been a very good day. And we were so glad that Steve's parents were able to drive down to share it with us :)

Kellen played so well!! I loved that in the golf pictures, you can really tell his glasses are shaded. Cool. And his teacher sounds pretty cool, too. I am taking notes for when I start teaching. (Hopefully at the start of the schoolyear...)

I'm back!! Glad to see all that has been going on in your life. I LOVE the pic of Kellen at the piano (well, really video--but the first frame is AMAZING). What a great, busy day!

Sounds like you had a nice day. That's great that in bringing "too much" food to the Coffee Hour, you ended up bringing just the right amount. Neat how that worked out.

Kellen played so well! He looks great in his glasses. I'm glad you posted the videos of him playing - it's so neat to see him doing that.

Way to go Kellen! I teach beginners and love to see them perform! It is always so great to see new students do recitals, they are so proud of themselves. It really is hard work, and he did fabulous! Keep it up, you did great!

Boy, Kellen and Madison are growing so much - I miss seeing them. Kellen looked great at the piano. I would love to hear him play. We enjoyed your folks here last weekend. It is kind of dull now.

It sounds like you had a great Sunday. How nice. Nathan grew up taking piano lessons too. He has played for 15 years and I love it.
