The Chinese New Year is the theme for Kellen's Bear den this month, and we've been learning a lot about that. Last night we talked about the Chinese calendar and the animals representing each of the 12 years in the calendar. So I went here and it tells you which animals belong to which years, and what characteristics are supposed to be endowed to people born under certain animals. This is our family :)
Steve - The Year of the Ox - Oxen are born leaders, inspiring confidence in everyone they come into contact with. However, they can be too demanding. Methodical and good with their hands, they make fine surgeons and hairdressers. Steve fits his better than anyone else, although I'm not sure he'd appreciate the reference about being a hairdresser :) Spot on!
Calista - The Year of the Dragon - Dragons tend to be popular individuals who are always full of life and enthusiasm, with a reputation for being fun-loving. They make good priests, artists and politicians. I do like to have fun, tackle new things, and take on artistic projects, but I'm not what you'd call the life of the party. So-so.
Kellen - The Year of the Tiger - Tigers are said to be bold and adventurous, and are bestowed with initiative and charm. However, they have a tendency to be risk takers, making them act before they think about the consequences. They tend to make good bosses, explorers or racing drivers. I think Kellen's is extremely off-base; he is very cautious, follows all the rules, and never takes risks. Maybe he was born in the wrong year...
Madison - The Year of the Rooster - The sign of the Rooster indicates a person who is hard-working and definite about their decisions. Roosters are not afraid to speak their minds and can therefore sometimes come across as boastful. They make good restaurant owners and world travellers. Well, she is definite about her decisions and never afraid to speak her mind, but some of that is just being 2. I could certainly see her as the world traveller some day, though...
Well, that was fun :) There are so many cool things we can learn about other cultures out there, and I am very grateful for the oppotunity to learn the things that I do with Kellen through helping him with his scout stuff. As much as I think I know sometimes, it reminds me that there is more out there to discover than I can even imagine; it keeps me humble :)
